- (continued from previous page)of flax by the left hand and the tongs in the right hand with the tongue turned down.The Dúilín was inserted between the tongue and the handle and the woman closed in the tongue with the right hand and drew out the flax with the left. The sharp edges of the tongs scraped away the husk or woody part of the flax. This was called "cloven" the flax. The Dúilín was inserted and withdrawn very quickly; a good "clover" doing as many as 80 strokes a minute.As many as six women worked at the same time and they made a terrible slather. As they worked they sang a local ditty, generally about the boys and girls of the place.
