    on yonder hill
    A gentleman, his wife, and son, his castle stands there still
    The son was comely, tall and bold he wished some life to see
    He left his home for sunny Spain when scarcely twenty-three.

    Years passed, the youth forgot his home, his father died of grief
    His mother pined from night till morn, till God sent her relief
    The peasants by their fires at night would talk of the youth in Spain
    And the girls would ask with bashfulness would he ever come back again.

    He lived in wealth and luxury played cards and drank galore
    But when the revelry was done memory turned to Cooley shore
    He'd think of his youth and mountain home of his friends and parents dear
    And though he neglected home and friend the thought oft brought a tear.
