- The patron Saint of the district is Saint Mochta. He was not an Irish man, but he came over from England with Saint Patrick when he was coming to Ireland on his mission. After he came to Ireland he settled in Ireland Louth and built a monastery here. There was a lot of land attached to the monastery. Parts of the monastery walls are standing yet and when it rains the walls are red with the blood of the monks who were killed by Cromwell.
Saint Mochta was a great friend of Saint Patrick and they used to meet at a certain place on the Green Road and have their conversation for Saint Patrick lived in and Patrick for a while.
After Saint Patrick went to Armagh he left his church, his leper hospital and the lepers in the care of Saint Mochta. At the bottom of the field in which the monastery is there is a stream called The Friars Stream, and some people obtain cures in the water.
