  1. Fairs (cattle, sheep and pigs) are held in Dunleer on the first Wednesday of every month- and old fairs are held on 6th Jan, 16th May, 1st Nov. and 20th Dec.
Buyers frequently go to farmers' houses to buy stall-fed cattle-
The fair is held on the street and no toll is paid for cattle sold.
When an animal is sold the buyer gets "luck-penny"- which if the farmer refuses to pay- many believe that he will have bad luck with his stock for some time to come.
The way in which it is calculated is usually sixpence in the £.
Some strike their hands and some spit on them when the bargain is made.
The sold animals are marked with scissors on the hip- or they are branded with "raddle"-
    (Reverse this)
Very few animals have halters in fairs but those who have halters on their beasts let them go - except of course horses, which halter is always retained by the owners
A butter and egg market was held in Dunleer long ago - but has been discontinued
