  1. An Old Song

My line and hook went with the brook

The following song was composed by a man named Carolan who lived below Slane and was given to me by Elizabeth Duff Newtown Beauparc Co Meath.
    I
My line and hook went with the brook
    And never yet was found,
She made answer in a tremor
    So me don't tantalise
    I'm but a shepherd's daughter
    Come bathing to the Boyne.
    II
My line and hook I value not
    No gold will purchase more
I'm so captivated by you a cailín a stóir
So if you agree and come with me
    I'll make you my bride
I have fifty acres of good land
    Down by the Slane-road-side.
