pay being about half a crown. The fair day in Slane very seldom goes by without being wet and wild. People of the district generally drive their cattle along with their neighbour's to the fair. When animals are sold sometimes they are marked with paint and others are sometimes marked by taking a piece out of their ear.
When an animal is sold the rope or halter is usually given away. This is generally done at a show so that the buyer can lead his beast home without difficulty. The great fairs of the district are held in Drogheda at different times of the year. There are special horse fairs held in Drogheda.
