- In Navan the forge is situated in Watergate St. The blacksmith carries in the work of making and fitting horseshoes. His ancestors were blacksmiths also. The smith makes iron rims for cartwheels and fits them. This work he does in the open. To fit the iron rims he heats them in the fire. In the yard there is a shoeing flag in the ground. The wheel is clamped down on the flag and the hot rim is then carried out and forced onto it with sledge-hammers while cold water is poured on to contract and tighten the iron band. He also make frost-nails to fit on the horseshoes to prevent slipping during frost. Sometimes he makes horse-(continues on next page)
