  1. There are a great many forts in this district. There is one beside us. It is called "Halfpenny's Fort". It is about twenty feet high. There are two entrances to it one opposite the other. There is a hedge all round it and it is grand and level in the middle. There is a gripe alround it. There is a river beside it. One time a man went to dig the fort to make it level with the ground, and the spade went out of his hands and he heard it cracking delph. The next day when he got up his mouth was where his ear should be.
