  1. My grandfather was taught in a hedge-school. There was a hedge-school in Scourlogstown about 2 1/2 miles from Kilskyre, and 3 1/4 miles from Kells. It was a little thatched two roomed house at a cross-roads. The teacher of this school was called Feilim O'Reilly, he would lodge in the same house.
My grandfather brought a sod of turf and a halfpenny or penny in payment for his learning. The classes were taught namely Greek, Latin, Irish. All these subjects were taught and explained in Irish. The teacher was a stranger he was from Robinstown.
