People, long ago, baked as much as did for a week, and always put a cross on the top of the cake. Bread was often baked in front of the fire against an iron stand.
On some particular night, they would bake special cakes in honour of that night, such as Shrove Tuesday, they would bake pan-cakes, or potato cakes. Nearly all those old customs are dying away now, though if the people would eat the oaten-bread they would be much healthier and stronger.- Collector
