- There was an old man long ago who remembered the famine. He used to tell a story about it. The men were so hungry that they used to pull turnips from a field and they brought them to the forge where that man worked and roasted them on the forge fire and ate them.
Old people in the district used to tell a story about when the men were making a road through Stirabout Hill. Each day when their work was over, they had to walk to Kell's about five miles away to get a quart of Stirabout for to do themselves and their families till the next day.- Collector
