The bogdeal splinters were made of bogdeal. In Summer the strumps of the bogdeal were dug up in the bogs. When they were dry they were cut into light long splinters. These were steeped in an inflammable mixture and kept for winter time. The splinters were used for lighting the rush candle and for carrying from one room to another. The rush candle and splinters were made in every house but the tallow candle was only made in the tan-yards.- Collector
