  1. There are a few men around here who are noted for thatching house. There are not many thatched houses in the district. It is hard to describe thatching. Maguires of Rathrass thatch with wheaten straw.

  2. A piece of an alder stick is got and shaped into the head of a pipe. The pith is taken out of it, and a small hole put in the side of it. A thick piece of an alder stick is got and the pith taken out of it. The is put through the hole in the head of the pipe. Then the pipe is left to dry.
