- Forts are very numerous around here. The nearest one to this town is in Gibney's field. It is just about a quarter of a mile beyond the bridge. I was at it several times.There is a cave under the fort, the entrance to which is closed by a large stone. Several people were going to open the cave, but as yet I do not think anyone has done so. There are a good many fairy tales told about the fort. One is that there is a bright path leading to and from it which can be seen quite plainly at 12 o'clock at night. And it is said that no one should follow this path, as it leads right in to the canal. Another story is told about a man named Fagan who was passing by this fort on summer's evening to milk his cows. He heard a child crying and a woman's voice telling the child to be quiet as she would soon have plenty of milk for her supper as this man calling him by his name was going to milk his(continues on next page)
