  1. The people of Ballymore believe firmly that Saint Patrick visited the district. It is said that he picked up a blackthorn on the Hill of Mullaghcloe which bore a strange inscription and which had come all the way from Palestine. This was the stick mentioned in the following poem

    When St Patrick came our land to bless he journeyed up and down
    To sow the seed of righteousness in country, lane and town.
    And few were there who did oppose the saving truths he taught
    And countless spells and miracles his doughty saintship wrought.
    But Lucifer he tried to thrape upon our holy saint
    By sending imps in reptile shape, the blessed isle to taint
    And certain sure these imps impure would press him hard and sore
    Had he not sought the hallowed spot since known as Ballymore
