- Potatoes are grown on our farm. We sow about two acres every year. My father prepares the ground. People in this district never manure the ground before turning it up. Some potatoes are sown in drills and some of them are sown in ridges. My father sows potatoes in drills. When he has the ground ploughed three or four times he makes the drill being about a foot and a half wide at the bottom. He leaves a furrow at each side of the drill about nine inches wide at the bottom and wider at the top, and this furrow he spreads manure and he spreads the seed potatoes down on the manure. A plough is used when sowing potatoes but sometimes people sow a few drills of early potatoes in the garden with a spade. Wooden ploughs were used in(continues on next page)
