“The name of my village is Newtownforbes and my Parish is Clonguish and barony Longford.”
(continued from previous page)its name from the Granard family whose family name is Forbes and who owned all the village at one time.
The oldest man in the village is Mr. Leonard who is eighty four years of age and he tells many English stories. There were about eight houses more in Newtownforbes at one time than now. I believe the people who owned them went to America and the houses were let fall. The name of the village is mentioned in some songs, one of which starts like this.
