  2. Hedge schools existed in this district about the year 1846. This school was carried on where at present is the townland of Garrowhill where the teacher had to exist on the contributions of his pupils and had to move about to various houses as the teaching of school was illegal and it would not be safe to remain long in the same house. this teacher whose name was Thomas Mac Donagh was teaching in this school at Garrowhill.
