    Eggs were tested in olden times to see if there were young chickens in them in the following way -
    The woman of the house got a basin of blood warm water, took the hatching eggs from the hen, put them into the water for about five minutes; if they moved in the water or began to shake that was a sure sign that they contained a live bird, if the egg sank to the bottom it meant a dead bird, and if it remained on the top without moving it was a bad egg.
