    was a contest between young boys and girls to see who could eat the most eggs.
    A bonfire was kindled on a hill or crossroads, and the young people gathered around it, with porringers and saucepans boiling their eggs, and then eating them. Coloured material such as a piece of red flannel was put into the saucepan with the eggs to colour them and make them more attractive for the children.
