- Long ago people made sheets and shirts out of flax. They grew the flax themselves. When it was ripe they pulled it and put it in water. They left it there for about fifteen days. Then they lifted it and spread it out to dry. When it was dry they tied it in sheaves and made stooks of it. After some time they dried it over a big fire and beetled it. They beetled it by putting it on a flag and they beetled it with a big oak beetle. When they had it beetled they hackled it and scutched it. Then(continues on next page)
