  1. Flax is a very nice crop when it is done growing. There comes a blue blossom on it. The blossom falls off when the flax is ripe. Then there comes a small seed which is called the low. People in this district grew and made linen about 40 years ago. The flax was then cut like oats and put in sheaves. It was then carted away to a deep hole full of water and covered with sods or stones to keep it down. It was kept in that hole for a fortnight. It was then taken up and spread on grass to dry and put in sheaves and stacked like oats. Then it was carted to the flax mill and scutched. There came what was called "shoves" off it, and if the mill was near a town the poor people burned the shoves.
