    near at hand. When there is a sign of rain the dog may be seen nipping at blades of grass. The cat sits on the hearth with her back to the fire. The crickets sing sharply. The soot falls from the chimney.
    The distant hills appear nearer to us. When shadows of trees and other objects appear in ponds and lakes, all these signs denote rainy and broken weather. It rains most with westernly winds.
    Cattle and sheep know when rain is coming.
    Sheep bunch together near hedges, and cattle will go away grazing early if there is a sign of a wet-
