    monks to Dunbrody " he handed the latter House over to St. Mary's Cistercian Abbey, Dublin. In 1436 Abbot John Henry was witness to the Pope's cancellation of the sentence of ex-communication pronounced against the inhabitants of the town of New Ross, for having murdered some of the Crutched Friars two centuries before. This cancellation was brought about by the influence of Bishop Robert Whitty, who from being parish priest of Kilmokea was raised to the See of Ferns in 1418. In 1522 Alexander Devereux was elected Abbot. His rule lasted till the Disolution of the Abbey. Feeling that the storm of the Reformation was about to engulf Dunbrody along with their other religious houses Abbot Devereux took the opportunity to enrich his relatives and friends by parcelling out by lease, large tracts of the Abbey lands. In 1537 Dunbrody was one of the first five abbeys suppressed by order of King Henry VIII, the four others being Bective, Baltinglass, Duiske and Tintern. The Abbot Devereux conformed to the new religion and was created first Protestant Bishop of Ferns. The late Dr. Grattan Flood held that Devereux recanted and was rehabitated and died in communion with Rome, relying for his opinion on a Papal Bull issued after the ex-Abbot's death and referring to him as "Alexander of happy memory".
