    Raymond. Their legs were first violently broken, and they were then hurled down the rock into the tide.
    Thus, by this ruthless massacre of five hundred Irishmen for defending their country from foreign invasion, began the Irish career of Hervey De Montmorency the founder of Dunbrody Abbey. It was probably remorse for this atrocious crime that prompted Hervey to build the Abbey so near the scene of this horrible deed. There must be some powerful motives to induce such a man in the prime of life, with a great military career before him, and even to break the ties of married life, and retire into the seclusion of a monastery.
    Our historians do not particularize the exact spot where stands Dundonolf rock, but the account given above and that Strongbow's ships came to anchor in the waters of Port Saint Mary,
