    has a higher antiquity than the Norman Period and it is to those Danish Christian settlements (of which Port. St. Mary is proof strong enough to strengthen this opinion) that we must trace this and other ecclesiastical remains in this district.
    There can be no doubt but the actual site of the Norman camp in 1171 was about a couple of hundred yards to the south of the ruined Church of St Catherine's, where a deep wide trench or fosse is still too be seen at this day. This trench runs in a line parallel with the inner bay, that ends in the deep glen or ravine that runs up into the land at this particular place in an eastern direction; so that the camp was flanked and protected from attack on the north side by the waters of the bay. This agrees with Magees account who quotes all
