    Ferns Castle
    Ferns Castle in which dwelt the detested Dermot McMurrough and where he confined Devorgilla. In the year 1166 it was burned down to prevent the town from being taken by Rory O'Connor who marched thither to punish Dermot for afflicting the prince of Breffney.
    It is certain that Ferns was demolished by fire previous to the Norman invasion.
    The Castle was rebuilt in 1176 by the sons of Maurice Fitzgerald who was 1st cousin to Strongbow.
    Ferns was an ecclesiastical see shortly after the introduction of Christianity into this country.
    It was founded by St Aidan its first Bishop in 598. St Ibar was a predecessor by some years and afterwards a contemporary of St Patrick.
    St Ibar had his residence on Begerin Island lately surrounded by the waters of Wexford Harbour and the grave of St Ibar is still pointed out in the crowded churchyard of the primitive insular church.
