  1. On the teams long ago there used be 21 men on each side. "Bows' the goals were called + there were also two point poles. It was a custom to have the lines men on horseback.
On 3rd May 1863 there was a great match between Blackwater (this parish) and Killisk on the slob. William Scallan of Ballyvaloo + Matt Brennan of Kilnew Blackwater were the linesmen + were armed with clubs. The following men hurled that day :-
    Mogue Shiggins, Bill McGuinness
    John Sheil, Thomas Bolger.
A local poet wrote the foll rhyme :-
his name was Ned Reilly of Castle ellis.
On the 3rd May in the year '63
To my satisfaction great sport I did see
The hurlers from Killisk we did overthrow
On the mud lands of Wexford and valour did show
Pat Kehoe, Cowman, he had a pleasant day
Three Briens + Mogue Shiggins supported the play
And brave Bill McGuinness, the pride of my song
I hope you'll excuse me if I have said wrong
John Sheil, Thomas Bolger + Anthony Roche
Caused Killisk for to tremble when they did approach
And brave Thom. Sinnott who drove on the bow
In the presence of thousands John Roche he laid low
