Dean Swift was a friend of the Rams.
On one occasion as the Dean was driving to Tubberneering to avail himself of the spa there his carriage came into collision with that of Mr. Ram and the Dean and his driver were thrown into the ditch. It was when he emerged unharmed from the roadside that Dean Swift thus expressed himself in lines that have come down in one shape of another to the present day:
"England's dread and Ireland's glory was thrown in the ditch by the great Ram of Gorey"
An invitation to dinner followed. With a view of having a good joke at the famous with Mr. Ram gave order that rabbit, and rabbit alone should be served at the meal. The Dean made no comment on this during the meal nor gave the slightest sign that anything beyond the ordinary was occurring. However at the conclusion when(continues on next page)- Collector
