Long ago, leather was tanned in this district, and it is still tanned in the New Ross Tannery. The hides of cows, calves and horses are taken to the tan-yard. The first thing done is the hides are put into lime for eight days, then into a beam to be unhaired, then unto the rounding-table to be split, and then into weak-tan liquer for a few days and then into heavier liquer for three weeks.
After that it is taken to the lofts to be rolled and then into a stove for three days and it is ready for sale then. It is tanned with marrabas. It was tanned about twenty years ago, in New Ross first.
