The land is hilly and good for crops. Potatoes do well there. The Esker river flows though Ballycon. Trout, perch, eels and pike are caught in it. - I live in Eskermore. There are twelve houses there and they are all thatched but three. The most common name long ago was Mooney. It got it's name from the sand-hill. Patrick Carey and his wife are over 70. Only the school children know Irish.
Denis Connell and Mrs Mooney (Eskermore, Daingean, Offaly) can tell stories in English.
There are altogether 36 people in the district.
A few yards from Miss Beehan's house is the remains of an old school. It is now used as a barn. A Protestant teacher, Mr Moody taught there long ago. Catholics went to school there as well as Protestants. Slates were used. Irish was(continues on next page)- Informant
