the summer evenings making daisy chains and dodge balls out of cowslips. Boys make whipping tops out of spools, and cribs for catching birds and snares for catching rabbits. It was a custom long ago to make false faces out of turnips, and bore holes with a knife to make eyes, nose, and mouth, and put a lighted candle inside, so as to frighten people.
Girls sometimes, when they are out playing in the fields, have great fun making daisy chains. First they gather a bunch of small and large daisies. A chain of large daisies is usually made by cutting the stems close to the blossom with a darning needle and woolen thread run through the centre of each daisy. A long chain is made. It can also be made by twisting the stems of the daisies together
