- Marriages take place in my district before Lent and before Advent. On shrove Tuesday all the people gather in to one house. The woman of the house makes pan-cakes for them and she puts a ring in them. Then which ever of the men gets the piece with the ring in it will be married in that year. It is very seldom that matches are made in my district. Sometimes money is given as a fortune. Very often stock is given such as cows or calves.
