- The Famine was also very severe around Shinrone. There are many fields around the district to be seen with ridges where the potatoes were never dug out and are now growing grass, There are also a number of old ruins of houses to be seen to this day where whole families died out of.
A great sickness came after the famine and there is a hospital about two miles from Shinrone which the people of the district used to go to.
After the potatoes taking the blight the chief food was turnips and stirrabout.
This hospital is now kept for a barn to hold potatoes and corn.- Collector
