crying child" is situation at less than a quarter mile from the school on a farm owned by Mr. Kearney. The origin of the name is derived from a story which had many counterparts in the Ireland of 100 or so years ago.
A child belonging to poor parents was toddling about near its home one day. The parents were engaged elsewhere, not far away, but out of sight. Anyhow the child disappeared. The agonised parents with the help of neighbours searched high and low but found no trace or sign of the their three-year-old child. About ten o'clock that evening the crying of a child was plainly heard coming from this particular field. Many people heard it. A rush was immediately made and a search begun, but again, a blank draw. The searchers withdrew crestfallen. On two succeeding evenings after that the parents heard the crying though the other people did not.
