by two men. A deep pit was made in a place convenient for carting and piling the trunks of trees. The sides of the pit were thickly walled and the earth from the pit placed at the back so as to make an incline. There were strong planks placed firmly across the top and the trunks of the trees were rolled up by men to these. In case of very heavy trees horses were yoked to them by means of drag-chains. The trunk was then fastened firmly and the carpenter or sawier planned and marked his plank or boards as he required. The saw used was set in a square or frame and one man at the top pulled it up and the man in the pit pulled it down and so on up and down until it sawed from end to end. For hundreds of years timber was sawn in this way on the farm of Mr. Hanlon Grangeford and the pit still remains there.
