- On the borders of Carlow and Kildare there was a large estate known as the Burton Hall, the owner being William Fitzwilliam Burton whose grandfather came into possession of it after the rebellion he being an English General. The estate became larger from time to time caused by certain portions of it being let to Catholic people and in time of trouble they were not able to pay their rent and they had in many cases to sign over their farms to Burton and become workmen of his. The Burton family never carried out evictions like other land lord but gave a lot of employment. He built a mansion for himself and houses for his men and built the thirty houses in Palatine. The last Burton having forgiven his tenants of hundreds of Pounds.
