Murphy Bro's now owned by Charles Mac Dermot, Bridge St. There were said to be the two best provisioned houses in the town.
The soldiers took some of the barrels of oil out of the houses & threw the oil in buckets on the houses. The flames of the fires could be seen in Carlow & the Carlow fire brigade set out for Tullow, but when they got here the soldiers would not let them touch the fire until it was going to catch to the other houses. When the fire spread to the houses in the yard where the barrels of oil & whiskey were they exploded & the people for miles around thought that poor old Tullow was blown to pieces.
