Rushes were gathered, peeled all around, but a strip of peel was left for strength. Tallow was melted in a vessel called a grisset, a long tank shaped vessel Rushes were dipped in this fat - allowed to soak & then left on a board to dry & harden. From ten to forty of these were burned each night according to the seasin and work going on.
