- People long ago, lived on indian porridge and buttermilk, and potatoes and salt or Butter. They used to eat yellow meal (whih was called "yarrow buck") for their breakfast and supper. For their dinner they had potatoes, and the woman used to throw the potatoes out on the table and the people would fill themselves. When a fair would come every month the people would buy herrings and put them on a twine and hang them up in the chimney to smoke them. Before doing so they would clean them and wash them and shake pepper and salt on them. They used eat them on a Friday or some on Sunday. They would get the herrings if they were going to thatch or mow hay.
