    The first traditional reference to the Hardy Family....

    The Captain's restless spirit is supposed to have wandered through the grounds of his house for years until it was finally laid to rest by Fr. Blanchville under a large stone in the river Dereen to which is attached a large iron spike and ring.
    The more important traditions of the '98 period to be found in this locality have already been forwarded by me to the Folklore initiative.
    Another notorious '98 figure about whom a considerable amount of local tradition is to be found was the infamous Lieutenant Laurence of Moyne who was a notorious bigot. The stories which connected him with the desecration of blessed wells etc I have already given to Mr. E O'Toole of Rathville who included them in his "Blessed Wells of County Carlow" and hence they need not be referenced here.
