- Ratheens are very plentiful in our district. There is one near our house. It is in Mr Kearn's (ral) bog, it is called Kearn's ratheen. It was never tilled, because it is supposed that people are buried there and something strange would happen to any one that would interfere with it.There are scaugh thorns growing there. They are shaped like a round o. There is a trench all round the scaughs and a low ditch on one side of it briars have grown up and filled up the trench. It is supposed that faries lived in them in olden times. One night a man was passing by the ratheen He saw a little man dancing and climbing the scaughs he began to laugh. The little man caught him and made him carry him round the field and from that day untill he died he had no use in his legMarch 23rd 1938
