- The old Slaughter road went up by Egans house but a new road was built during the famine time to give work. The workers got four pence per day.The old name of the Slaughter road was "Slighe Uachtar" which means the upper way. It was called this to distinguish it from the Callow Hill road which went round the base of the hill. These two roads lead to Roundwood and thence to Glendaloch on account of its importance as a school and monastary.
