- The blight fell on the potatoes like frost, which caused the famine in the years;- '46- '48. This blight caused the stalks of the potatoes to turn black. Then the potatoes decayed in the ground, until there was not a potato safe in the whole country.
In this place that time the potatoes were the only food the people had. There were no shops this time until they would go to the towns. They had nothing to eat then. They used to eat grass and hay. They were dying along the road-side, and out in the fields. All their vegetables were even destroyed.
There were some people who had oat meal during the famine. This was what they lived on. Other people had not this. They used to live on herbs such as nettles. In our townland that time there were eight houses and now there are only five houses. There are still to be seen, the ruins of those old houses.
