- During the penal times in Ireland, the priests were hunted from their homes and had to be going about from place to place, and if they were found by the English soldiers they would be put to death, so that they had to say Mass on the mountain side in a hiding place where they would not be found. The people never lost their religion during those times for they always went to Mass on the mountain side, and helped the priests and kept guard for them.
In this country there were a couple of rocks where Mass was said during those times, and any place where Mass was said was afterwards called the Mass-Rock. This is a story of a priest who was hunted. It happened near Belcoo, Co Fermanagh, out-side this parish.
This priest came to this cave where he hid. He got out in the morning to say mass on a big stone near the cave. It was a Christmas morning and the place was covered with snow. The people around(continues on next page)- Collector
