- Long ago people did not take half as much care of their feet, as the people now. Long ago people never wore boots or shoes in the Winter or Summer and they were supposed to be as healthy as the people now. Anyone that had soft feet they washed them in water mixed with salt or mustard. There were no shoemakers at that time, but later still shoemakers got their trade and this was of much comfort to the people. There was a man named James Reilly who made boots and shoes and charged very little for making them. In the winter, the farmers wore clogs to keep their feet warm. They were made with wooden soles and leather uppers.
