Gruel
Another very scarce food now-a-days is gruel. it was made by mixing oaten meal and water and boiling them. When it was boiled sugar was added. If this food is still made it is only made for someone with a cold, as it is considered a good cure for that sickness.
Sowains
Sowans was a very healthy food of long ago. It is very seldom made to-day, but if it were it would be made in the following way:- Oaten meal is mixed with water at first, and they are left -by for a fortnight to get sour. It is then boiled into a kind of jelly. Some people eat it with sugar, and some people eat it with salt and milk like porridge.(continues on next page)- Collector
