  1. The following story was told me very often in my childhood.
Once an old woman was sweeping the floor and she found a sixpence. She went to a fair and with it she bought a goat.
On her way home she had to cross a stile near which grew a briar bush on which was much fruit. When she reached the stile she said "Goat Goat" cross stile.
Till I eat my bonny bush of blackberries."
    The goat wouldn't.
She said: "Dog, dog bite goat
    Goat wont cross the stile
Till I eat my bonny bush of blackberries,"
    The dog wouldn't.
    The woman said:
    "Stick, stick, beat dog.
    Dog won't bite goat
Goat won't cross the bridge (stile)
Till I eat my bonny bush of blackberries,"
    The stick wouldn't.
    Then the old woman said:
    "Fire! Fire" burn stick
    stick wont beat dog.
    Dog wont bite goat
    Goat " cross the stile
Till I eat my bonny bush of blackberries,"
