- The kind of bread that was obtained in this district in olden times was oaten bread, potato bread and boxty bread. In olden times querns were used in the district. Boxty bread was made by grating potatoes raw and boiled potatoes. Then both were rolled on a board with flour and put in an oven to bake. Potato bread is made with boiled potatoes flour and salt. Oaten bread was made with oaten meal and boiling water. In olden times bread was made every day. The oaten bread was baked in the front of the fire standing against a gridiron. The gridiron was made from iron.(continues on next page)
