- The houses were thatched in former times, and the straw was pulled and put in bundles and thatched the roof with the bundles of straw or rushes.
There was a bed standing along the wall in the kitchen and it was called a Settle-bed. The old floors were made of blue clay.
Half doors are common still in this locality and were common long ago.
Turf and sticks were used for burning in the fire.
The inside of rushes were dipped in grease and for candles.
The chimney that was long ago was a box or little barrel on the top of the house.
There is no account of the fire ever been in the centre of the house, or the windows having no glass.- Collector
